The Copake General Store in the heart of downtown
Copake was the main supplier of groceries for many years, in
addition to work shoes, sweat pants and children's toys. But
times change; supermarkets and mega-stores were built in surrounding
towns, and small general stores have a hard time holding their
own.
In Copake a wonderful new effort has begun: Copake
citizens have begun meetings with Lucky, the store's new owner,
on the porch of the General Store to discuss revitalizing the
store – and with it Copake itself.
Local distributors have been lined up to provide
good bread, organic meat, local fruit and vegetables and a good
selection of reasonably-priced groceries. Smoothies and
fresh fruit juices will be offered, and delicious curry and rice
will be served at the bistro-style tables in the front of the
store. You
can drink your cup of coffee while watching the world go by outside
or look through a paperback from the bookcase in the corner.
A lot of plans are in the works – internet Wi-Fi, Friday
night specialties for weekenders, local produce sold on commission,
etc.
Come join the process
Each Monday at 5:00 interested Copakeans meet on the store
porch to plan events and discuss new items to be introduced, especially
local merchandise like good breads and meats, freshly pressed juices,
home-made cookies, curry dishes, and hand-made articles sold on commission.
We are all very excited and hope you
will join us in rejuvenating the Copake General Store and through
that the hamlet of Copake itself.
